The Town

Clonakilty is located in picturesque West Cork along the Wild Atlantic Way. It is home to colourful shop fronts, amazing local and international cuisine, and is renowned for it traditional Irish music heritage. Ideally located only 40 minutes’ drive from Cork City it has an activity to suit everyone’s tastes. Clonakilty is an ideal holiday destination and base from which to tour West Cork, a region blessed with some of Ireland’s most spectacular scenery.

The natural beauty of the surrounding countryside is enhanced even more by the abundance of birdlife to be discovered on Clonakilty’s tidal bay, marshes and hinterland. The town hosts several festivals each year, among these are The Clonakilty International Guitar Festival, National Brass Band Competition and The West Cork Rally

The Region

In Ireland’s beautiful far South West where the ancient Kingdom of Kerry meets the rugged beauty of West Cork, five great peninsulas with mountainous spines stretch for miles into the ocean. This is great walking country, with long distance trails and circular routes across the region.

Hugging the coast, or crossing Ireland’s highest mountains, breathtaking views unfold at every turn. It’s the furthest west in all Ireland: “next parish Manhattan”, as the locals would say around here. And there’s a distinctly edge-of-the-world feel to the southern peninsulas, as both the mainland and everyday life are left far behind.

You could find yourself paddle boarding with dolphins, landing on a deserted archipelago (once home to Ireland’s greatest born storytellers), taking a cable car with the ocean crashing below, sailing to a World Heritage Site (Lonely Planets’ Best In Travel 2017’s top 10 regions to visit), visiting an abandoned copper mine, or star gazing under Ireland’s darkest skies. Always memorable, sometimes life changing… never ordinary!
